Robert Lovell - who exhibits under his mother’s maiden name - resumed his painting career after a long diversion as a teacher and academic in schools and colleges in and around North London. He left the profession after ten years teaching History of Art at Francis Holland School by Regent’s Park. He holds a doctorate from the University of Sussex where his thesis centred on a post-structural analysis of the early works of Robert Rauschenberg. However, his practice as an artist is much more closely linked to a British abstract tradition that runs from Ben Nicholson to Heron, Hilton and on to Sandra Blow, Howard Hodgkin and Barbara Rae.
The current exhibition while united by colour is diverse in its sources and varied in its outcomes.
